CURRENT COMPETITIONS: IN MAGAZINE

Outer Edge in association with Yukon Tourism has a peach of a prize package up for grabs that includes two return air fares to the Yukon Territory in Canada, two days guided mountain biking on some of the world’s best trails, two days padding on the one of North America’s mightiest rivers and a backpack full of cultural experiences thrown in to boot.

But we want to ensure that this incredible prize goes to someone suitably adventurous, so first we’d like to know what you would do if you were presented with a full 24 hours of sun-drenched time to play in.

The capital of the Yukon, Whitehorse, is just three degrees shy of the Arctic Circle – which means that, while the sun doesn’t quite stay up around the clock, it is still high in the sky when the big hand slaps midnight, and the place never truly gets dark. Lucky locals have come up with some novel ways to enjoy their extra quota of solar-powered time. Around the summer solstice in June, a deluge of events kick off, such as the legendary paddling race the Yukon River Quest, and the 24-Hours-of-Light Mountain Bike festival, a 24-hour endurance race where bike lights are neither required nor allowed.

So, what would you get up to under midnight sun? Perhaps you’d climb Mt Mount Logan (5959 metres), the tallest mountain in Canada, or maybe you’d go mountain biking around some of the 800km of MTB trails that surround Whitehorse City

WIN!:$2500 worth of Vaude adventure gear

Moet or Moe? We never know how to pronounce the super bubbly stuff's name either. Same goes for champagne-quality outdoors brand Vaude, a German offering across trekking, biking, paddling and adventure racing gear that cops its fair share of mis-pronunciation. So to win their gear, we want you tell us how to say it correctly and so avoid the embarrassment our Deputy Editor went through when chatting to the Vaude team at this year's outdoor industry event, SOTA.

HOW TO ENTER: watch the Vaude video on Outer Edge TV. Then produce one of the following:

1. a short (up to 30 second) audio or video advert with the correct pronunciation of Vaude. Files can be any recognised electronic file for audio or video (mov. aiff. wav. etc). You can also direct us to a YouTube clip (or any other audio/video hosting site) to enter. Make it punchy, funny or pertinent to the brand

OR

2. write a three-line poem, verse or go wild and make it a Haiku. The key to winning: what rhymes with Vaude? (yes, we know Haikus aren't supposed to rhyme - who said we outdoors bunch weren't cultured?).

OR

3. make a haiku video. We'd be very impressed.

EDITION 12

COMPETITION #1 BLACK WOLF TURBO TENT

Up for grabs was one of the fastest tents in the world to put up – the Black Wolf Turbo 240, worth $1,249.95. Check it out at blackwolf.com.au. We asked you to show us the best ‘loo with a view’ you’ve ever come across on your travels and tell us where in the world you came across it and what the view is of.

Here is the winning entry from Andrew Thomas:

"Here’s my mate (Hadyn) on a loo found half way along the Kokoda track. The facilities may have been primitive, but the view sure made up for it. Just for the record, we did Kokoda with No Roads Expeditions and our lead porters were Javid and Gibson {the Outer Edge cover lads] who recently competed in the Mark Webber Challenge. This loo is in Javid and Gibson's home village of Kagi."

Andrew Thomas wins a Black Wolf Turbo tent worth nearly $1300.

COMPETITION #2 THE NORTH FACE ROAD RUNNER TENT

The winner was:

COMPETITION #3 SteriPEN Adventurer

In our Gearing Up feature we looked at extreme and lightweight camping gear (p47) with advice from expedition leader Andrew Strong. To win a SteriPEN Adventurer UV water purifier (courtesy of Sea To Summit, see steripen.com) worth $239.95 – a must for wilds where water borne nasties run rampant – we asked for your best lightweight camping tip.

The winning tip:

Kevin Smith from Queensland  found an extreme use for dental floss:

"I always include in my pack some dental floss. Dental floss can replace heavier, bulkier cord etc. It can be used for tying all sorts of things. I use it for tying back tent door or fly to allow ventilation while still keeping the rain off. (I bushwalk in the tropics) A 50 metre roll of dental floss is smaller and lighter than 3 metres of cord. I used to carry a roll on me when I was hang gliding, in case I ever landed in tree tops. The idea was to lower down the floss so I could then haul up a rope to be rescued from the tree. Luckily I never did need to use it for that. Some dental floss would have been very handy to have one time years ago when a mate and I discovered some complex caves with many tunnels that we partly explored. We could have explored more if we had floss to leave as a trail to find our way back.

EDITION 10: GREATEST ESCAPE COMPETITION

Congratulations to Leanne Churchill from Newtown Victoria for winning our Great Escape subscriber competition. To win, apart from subscribing, Leanne had to tell us what her dream greatest escape would be. Her entry won for its sheer ambition, variety of destinations and activities and for the fact that, instead of envisaging lazy beach days, she took it to the, ahem, outer edge. And then some. Plus, by all indications she’s the quintessential outdoors fanatic: her email domain is aussieadventuregirl.com. We like her style.

Here’s her response>

“My greatest escape? Seven summits. Begins with a climb of the ecologically vast and oft underestimated Mt Kiliminjaro with a safari to experience the wonders of the African savannah. Then it’s off to New Zealand to learn the finer points of climbing and surviving in a glacial wilderness, before an attempt at the wild summit of Denali. The third of the seven summits is a late 2010 visit to the icy desert that is the Antarctica, a summit of Vinson and a ski expedition from the 89th to the 90th degree – the absolute South Pole. And that’s just the first three.

Her prize>

With a huge thanks to No Roads Expeditions and Harvey World Travel Glenelg, Leanne wins a trip for two people to Indonesia, including a No Roads Expeditions’ 9-day Sacred Mountain Tour to climb one of SE Asia’s best kept secrets, visit waterfalls and a high altitude lake, swim and snorkel pristine tropical waters, take in an active volcano, cop a Sasak stick fighting session and suck up a few famous Balinese sunsets. Leanne’s trip will include return airfares to Bali and domestic Indonesian flights, meals accommodation and transfers. The only question is, can we come?
